25.3.14 Openess
Dear Friends of Sacred Ground,
In his book Strength to Love, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., says: “Faith is the opening of all sides at every level of one’s life to the divine inflow. . . . Man filled with God and God operating through man bring unbelievable changes in our individual and social lives.” (p. 143) I think this is what Sacred Ground means when we talk of “envisioning our world transformed through the awakening and deepening of faith.”
Fear transformed into fortitude. Despair transformed into steadiness. Cold hearts transformed into hearts full of compassion, courage, and creativity. Love made visible in us and through us. Hearts fully alive.
“I am your very breath; I have been
with you from the beginning.
Open your heart wide, and
I will fill it.” (From Psalm 81, Nan C. Merrill’s Psalms for Praying)
Hearts and lives wide open. This is both an invitation and a prayer. This is the work of spiritual direction and of contemplation. It is the invitation of the Examen and Ignatius’s Spiritual Exercises. This is the invitation of the Enneagram and Creativity.
May we notice what opens our hearts.
May we notice when our hearts go hard.
May we do more of what opens our hearts wide.
I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that our future depends upon it.
In hope and with gratitude,
Jessica Sanborn (she/her)
