Freedom in the Days of Long Light

Beams of sunlight stream through a clearing in the woods.

As we approach the summer solstice, many cultural and spiritual traditions mark this season as a time of gratitude and abundance. Our very biology, through the circadian rhythm, reminds us that we are part of nature and respond to its seasons just as all of creation does. In these light-filled days, nature is humming a call of life and vitality.

These days of long light are a gift that aligns with the celebration of Juneteenth. As we commemorate liberation and renew our commitment to the inherent dignity and value of all people, the solstice reminds us that Divine Light will always outweigh darkness. Systems of racism, prejudice, and injustice thrive under the cover of darkness. Juneteenth and the solstice join together in encouraging us to look for the Light and to be Light embodied for those around us.

In the Spirit of Juneteenth and liberation from the things that bind us, we invite you to spend some time with this guided reflection in the days to come.

Light and Liberation Reflection

Choose a place to sit that feels freeing to you, somewhere where you feel at home with yourself. Begin by taking a few deep breaths as you settle into your seat. Notice the light around you. Imagine that it’s illuminating the shadows, revealing what the Spirit invites you to notice.

When you feel ready, ask yourself the following questions, spending time only with those that resonate with you. You don’t have to rush to find answers. Instead, we invite you to sit with the questions and remember that certainty is not the goal.

  • What stops you from being your fullest, freest self?

  • How might you respond to that part of yourself that feels “unfree”?

  • Where do you notice yourself experiencing a feeling of spaciousness?

  • In what ways are you being invited to participate in supporting justice and freedom for your neighbors?

  • What would it look like for you to step more fully into the light?

  • What grace do you need to move toward greater freedom for yourself and others?

As you end your time of reflection, close with gratitude to the Light for illuminating these things in your life.
