Speaking of God: A Contemporary Vocabulary for Speaking of the Holy One

In this session, we will explore the new vocabulary with which Christian churches are learning to speak of the Holy One—moving beyond the old images of a distant, absent, male deity (often pictured as “two men and a bird”). Drawing on the theology of Elizabeth A. Johnson and Karl Rahner, we will focus on how Jesus taught us to imagine God as present, forgiving, seeking us out, and loving.

Together, in conversational style, we’ll spell out this fresh vocabulary: how it helps us pray, how it shifts our trust, how it invites us to walk with Holy Mystery in our everyday holiness. Whether you’ve grown weary of clichéd language or are simply hungry for deeper connection, this gathering invites a re-imagining of the Divine in ways that open our hearts and challenge our assumptions. You can find a wealth of information on these matters at SpeakingOfGod.org
