25.5.16 Seeing God with Practice
How can we see God at work and at play in the world around us or in the people in front of us? How do we keep our hearts open and receptive to God and to others, especially in times of fear and distraction?
With practice.
"With practice, we allow God to enter into our heartbeat and our breathing, into our thoughts and emotions, into our hearing, seeing, touching, and tasting, and into every membrane of our body. It is by being awake to God in us that we can increasingly see God in the world around us."
~ Henri Nouwen, Spiritual Direction: Wisdom for the Long Walk of Faith (p.xvi)
And don't we need to see God in our world, especially now?
Tomorrow we look forward to welcoming Bill McDonough to our final Groundings session of this 2024-25 season as he invites us to explore spiritual practices in a time of crisis. There is still time to register. We'd love to see you in person or on zoom.
This practice of seeing and listening is also at the heart of the ministry of spiritual direction. If you are curious about becoming a spiritual director, we have a few upcoming opportunities to share with you. Sacred Ground is hosting another online open house for its Spiritual Formation & Training Program on Thursday evening. And we are taking part in a collaborative event on June 2, "Am I Called to Be a Spiritual Director?" We would love for you to explore these invitations with us.
May your hearts find grace and beauty and courage in the days ahead.
In hope and with gratitude,
Jessica Sanborn (she/her)
